The 1996 heroin and cocaine overdose was the final straw, the epiphany, the beginning of the one-day-at-a-time trek into recovery. The OD/near-death experience came after Depeche Mode had recorded songs for its upcoming album, Ultra. The sessions, done in New York, had not gone well for Gahan.
